Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the difference between the MA and MEd in Early Childhood Education?

The MA is a research-oriented degree. As such, it is the preferred route for individuals planning to pursue a doctoral degree after the Master’s. While the MEd also includes research courses, its focus is primarily on knowledge of professional practice.

2. How long does it take to complete an MA or MEd?

Both the MA and MEd may be pursued on either a full-time or part-time basis. While program duration varies, full-time MEd students may be able to complete their programs in approximately 12 months. Because the MA includes a research thesis, the MA program may take a little longer. Part-time MEd students typically take approximately two and a half years to complete, depending on the number of courses taken in any given term. The part-time MA program may take slightly longer, depending on the nature of the research thesis.

3. Are the MA and MEd programs in early childhood education only for teachers?

While the majority of students in the MA and MEd are teaching professionals, the Master’s degrees in early childhood education are also appropriate for individuals in other professions related to early childhood education and care, such as child and youth care, nursing, psychology, and social work.

4. How do I apply for admission? When are applications due?

Application procedures and deadlines can be found at the Centre for Cross-Faculty Inquiry.

5. What does the program cost? Are scholarships available?

Information on scholarships, financial support, tuition, and so on, is available at the Faculty of Education Office of Graduate Programs and Research.

6. Do you have any special offerings in the summer sessions for which I can obtain graduate credit?

In addition to offering courses, the Institute also hosts an Early Childhood Education and Research Summer Institute. Participants may attend on a non-credit basis, or for undergraduate or graduate credit. For information, please click here.
