Fraser Valley M.Ed. in Early Childhood Education
Location: Abbotsford
Offered by: Centre for Cross-Faculty Inquiry and Institute
for Early Childhood Education and Research
The Centre for Cross-Faculty Inquiry
The Centre for Cross-Faculty Inquiry of UBC invites you to
join an off-campus Master of Education program based in the
Fraser Valley, designed to respond to the interests and concerns
of early childhood educators and administrators in British
Columbia. The program is designed for the "working professional".
The Students
A cohort of students will be accepted into the program, which
is scheduled to begin September, 2005. This group will be
together for most of their course work. While early childhood
education is the focus, a diversity of interests and experiences
will be represented within the cohort, and elective courses
may be chosen from other areas if they relate to one's program.
The Faculty
The ECE program is administered by the interdisciplinary
Institute for Early Childhood Education and Research, under
the auspices of the Centre for Cross-Faculty Inquiry. Faculty
members from other departments and from organizations outside
UBC may be involved in the program.
The Curriculum
The program consists of thirty credits of course work, typically
structured as 10 three-credit courses. A minimum of six courses
will be offered to all students at a convenient site in the
Fraser Valley. These are meant to provide a broad overview
of the central issues in early childhood education and will
include courses such as:
| *
foundations in early childhood education |
| *
theory and research in early literature. |
| *
pre-kindergarten curriculum assessment of infants and
young children with special needs. |
|
* home, school, and community relations |
| *
action research |
| *
field experiences research methodology in education (required
of all masters students) |
These six courses are supplemented with four elective courses,
selected by participants with the assistance of their faculty
advisor.
Tentative Schedule
The program is offered over a three-year period. Courses
are scheduled to accommodate working people. Most courses
are offered after regular school hours during the school year
or during the day in the summer. Compact courses during May
and June or other flexible arrangements including Saturday
classes may be possible, as determined by the group.
Support
Email and web-based communications are used to keep students
informed about ongoing program details. A program assistant
works with the cohort for the duration of the program.
Admission
All applicants to the Master of Arts or Master of Education
in Early Childhood Education must meet the following requirements:
| *
a completed Bachelor of Education degree or a four-year
undergraduate degree in a related field |
| *
